Class Overview
8th Grade Science
The 8th grade science curriculum provides extensive opportunity to practice and master concepts and skills introduced in the 6th and 7th grade courses. Although emphasis is placed on physical science, the 8th grade course lays the foundation for all of the courses taken at the high school level. Students explore chemical concepts including the periodic table, atoms, and matter, physical concepts including force and motion, and biological concepts including organisms, their environments, and their interactions. In May, students will take the Science STAAR test to determine academic acheivement in 8th Grade and academic readiness for high school courses.
AP Chemistry
The AP Chemistry course provides students with a college-level foundation to support future advanced course work in chemistry. Students cultivate their understanding of chemistry through inquiry-based investigations, as they explore topics such as: atomic structure, intermolecular forces and bonding, chemical reactions, kinetics, thermodynamics and equilibrium. All students are expected to take the AP Chemistry Exam in May for an opporunity to earn college credit.
Class Schedule
Tutoring
Tutoring for science occurs on Tuesdays (for 8th grade students) and Thursdays (for chemistry students) from 4:30pm-5:30pm. Tutoring is a means of supplemental instruction and only serves to help your student. Throughout the year, students will receive letters to encourage them to attend tutoring for additional support. Should your student receive a tutoring letter, it is extremely important that they attend the scheduled tutoring sessions, as lessons have been planned to support standards they may be struggling with. Should you feel that your student needs additional help, but did not receive a tutoring letter from me, please let me know! I'm more than happy to work with your student in a small group setting to help them succeed. If your student needs to stay after school to complete an assignment, work on extra credit, or do homework, they are welcome to stay on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, if they do not have tutoring for another class. Saturday tutorings will be scheduled throughout the spring semester in preparation for the STAAR and AP exams, and more information will be provided as those dates near.
